  Abstract  This paper will conduct a community assessment of Marion County, Indiana. Marion County is located in the heart of Indianapolis, which is the capital of the state of Indiana.  Marion County was created April 1, 1822 and was formed from Delaware New Purchase.  It was named after General Frances Marion from South Carolina in the Revolutionary War period. This assessment will address the health needs and risks of Marion County through the use of the WGU assessment forms identifying the populationââ¬â¢s economic status, neighborhood and community safety inventory, cultural assessment, and the disaster assessment and planning guide. Census was comprised of 58.6% of the population as non-Hispanic White, 27.2% non-Hispanic Black or African American, 0.2% non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native, 2.1% non-Hispanic Asian, 0.3% from some other race (non-Hispanic) and 2.2% of two or more races (non-Hispanic). 9.4% of Indianapolis population was of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin (U.S. Census, 2010).  The percent of Latinoââ¬â¢s in Marion County has increased over 50% within the last 10 years going from 33,000 to more than 84,000 according to new census figures posted as of February 2011.   Safety Hazards in the Natural Environment Air pollution is associated with a wide range of health risks, including respiratory problems, allergies, cancer, lead poisoning, and others.  Marion County is in compliance with air quality standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, particulates, and lead. Radon, on the other hand, is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, which emanates from rocks and soil that contributes to the incidence of lung cancer.  Children appear to be at a higher risk for lung cancer because they are more sensitive to the ionizing effects of radiation than adults, and parents that smoke amplifies their childrenââ¬â¢s risk.
